Our original charter was signed in Rock Springs, WY. on December 15th, 1918. Our
members are employed by the Union Pacific Railroad and work in the states of
Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming. Just a brief explanation of
a Signalman’s duties are to install and maintain block signal systems, automatic
highway crossing warning devices, automatic train controlling or stopping
systems, centralized traffic control systems, pole line, underground cable, hot
box detectors, gas, electric or other types of switch heaters, and car retarder
systems. Signalmen may be required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License or FCC
Radio Telephone Operators License depending on their job description. Signalmen
have to be skilled at a wide variety of tasks and are also covered under the
Federal Hours of Service Act. Our territory also encompasses an Electronic Board
Repair Facility in Council Bluffs, IA., the Centralized Dispatching Center at
Omaha, NE., Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE., which is the world’s largest
classification yard. It covers 2,850 acres and extends a length of 8 miles.
Between North Platte, NE. and Gibbon, NE. there is an average of over 130 trains
a day making it the busiest freight line in the world.
