Welcome to the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen
Rock Springs Local 8 Web Site
Our original charter was signed in Rock Springs, WY. on December 15th, 1918. Our members are employed by the Union Pacific Railroad and work in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming. Just a brief explanation of a Signalman’s duties are to install and maintain block signal systems, automatic highway crossing warning devices, automatic train controlling or stopping systems, centralized traffic control systems, pole line, underground cable, hot box detectors, gas, electric or other types of switch heaters, and car retarder systems. Signalmen may be required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License or FCC Radio Telephone Operators License depending on their job description. Signalmen have to be skilled at a wide variety of tasks and are also covered under the Federal Hours of Service Act. Our territory also encompasses an Electronic Board Repair Facility in Council Bluffs, IA., the Centralized Dispatching Center at Omaha, NE., Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE., which is the world’s largest classification yard. It covers 2,850 acres and extends a length of 8 miles. Between North Platte, NE. and Gibbon, NE. there is an average of over 130 trains a day making it the busiest freight line in the world.
